How to Craft Legendary Items in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands

In World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, players can craft Legendary items that improve their gameplay. Crafting Legendaries requires four materials.

Since 2004, World of Warcraft players have always been able to determine the quality of items, armor, and weapons by their ranking system. All items a player could pick up were labeled as Poor, Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, and Legendary, with Poor being the worst quality and stats, and Legendary being the best. Naturally, Legendary items were harder to obtain and could take players hours to find. With the release of the new Shadowlands expansion, players may now access Legendary items more easily through Legendary Crafting.

To craft a Legendary item, players will imbue it with certain powers that enhance their class abilities. Any character, regardless of race and class, has an opportunity to unlock Legendary Crafting and use the system, though characters in crafting professions will likely have a slightly easier time with this. Players will need to have reached Level 60, the new max level for World of Warcraft, joined a Covenant, and completed the first chapter and quests of their Covenant’s campaign before they can unlock Legendary crafting. They will then need to seek the Runecarver, a new NPC in Torghast in The Maw during chapter 2 of their Covenant’s campaign. This NPC will offer the set of quests needed to access Legendary Crafting. When the player has unlocked this new mechanic, there are a few more steps to complete before they can get their hands on high-level, endgame items. Here’s how to craft Legendary items in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands.

Players need four components to craft Legendary items and may need to do some farming prior to creating their gear. These four components are:

  • A Base Item
  • 2 Missives
  • 1250-5150 Soul Ash (based upon item Rank/Level)
  • Memory of the Runecarver Legendary Recipes

The set of quests from Ve’nari and the Runecarver during the second chapter of the Covenant campaign will help players access a few of these components right away.

Base Items can be purchased from or crafted by characters in crafting professions. This includes Tailors, Jewelcrafters, Blacksmiths, and Leatherworkers. Characters in those professions will need to find Base Item recipes from participating in endgame content like completing world quests or killing dungeon bosses first. Players can also trade with other players for these items, purchase them at the Auction House, or have a high-level alt make them and transfer them.

Missives determine secondary stats for the Legendary item. These can include critical strike, haste, and versatility, among other options. These must be crafted by high-level Inscriptionists.

Soul Ash is another new kind of currency, like Renown or Anima, that is only found in The Maw. Players will need to enter the endless dungeon of Torghast and clear layers and quests there to obtain enough Soul Ash to craft Legendaries. Torghast has a cap, and players can only earn about 1200 Soul Ash a week for clearing the layers of both chambers. Players will also need to be careful to avoid doing too much in The Maw. If their Eye of the Jailer meter gets too high, they will be killed quickly and need to wait a day to return.

To find Memories of the Runecarver, players will need to kill enemies or dungeon bosses and complete certain quests. This can happen either in The Maw or elsewhere in the Shadowlands, as Memories tend to be a fairly frequent drop. However, drops are still random, so it may take time for players to get the recipe they want.

Once the player has all the needed components, they should return to The Maw, enter Torghast, and interact with the Runecarver. This will pull up the Legendary Crafting Interface, and the Runecarver will guide the player in crafting the Legendary item. Characters may only wear one Legendary at any given time. If the player wants, they can also bring items back to the Runecarver, along with more Soul Ash, to receive upgrades.
