Flash Theory: Barry Allen Creates His Own Villain Team

Flash Theory Barry Allen Creates His Own Villain Team

One theory postulates that the Scarlet Speedster will put together a supervillain team in The Flash season 9. Evidence tied to the trailers for the show’s final season reinforce the notion that Barry will tackle Central City’s next threat by heading in an unexpected direction. Rather than rely solely on his fellow superheroes, Barry may turn to some of his old foes for help.

The Flash has provided a few pieces of the puzzle in terms of the story for season 9. Based on the trailers and the synopsis, Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen will be up against a new incarnation of the Rogues team. Not only that, but he’ll also be pitted against Red Death, who appears to be a doppelganger of Batwoman’s Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie). There’s also the matter of Cobalt Blue, a key member of Barry’s rogues’ gallery and a character clearly set up as a season 9 villain by The Flash season 8 finale’s post-credits scene. Exactly where all of these characters fit into the bigger picture remains to be seen, but it’s been suggests that some of the many villains featured in The Flash season 9 will actually be on Barry’s side.

Not All Of The Flash Season 9’s Villains Are Evil

In spite of their histories fighting Barry, a handful of the villainous characters teased to appear in The Flash season 9 aren’t truly evil. Both the pre-Crisis and post-Crisis versions of Pied Piper eventually reformed and stopping battling Team Flash. The Hotness, another former enemy of the Flash, turned his life around after his incarceration in a season 4 episode. There’s also Chillblaine, a villain who became a friend to Team Flash and is about to become a main character on the show. Based on where their previous stories left these characters, none are expected to be villains when they return and could very well be allies to Barry in the future.

The Flash season 9 seemingly has two additional villains with the potential to be aligned with the Scarlet Speedster. Although Goldface is a notorious gangster with no qualms about taking lives, it’s important to note that he’s not on the same level as bloodthirsty killers like Bloodwork. First and foremost, he’s a street-level villain. Since Central City is his home, it’s at least possible that he and Barry would share a common goal if the city was threatened.

Something similar could apply to Gorilla Grodd, a character who might be the subject of a tease in The Flash season 9 teaser trailer. Following the sound of a growl, Barry could be seen looking up at a mysterious figure in the forest that may or may not be Gorilla Grodd. He’s of course one of Barry’s most dangerous adversaries, but he’s also someone who isn’t above putting aside his personal differences with Barry. In The Flash season 6, he fought alongside Barry after claiming to have regretted his past actions.

The Flash Season 9 Trailers Teases Barry’s Villain Team-Up

Various moments in The Flash season 9 trailer are indicative of Barry joining forces with some of the season’s returning villains. When Pied Piper says, “I have nothing to live for,” Barry responds, “Yes, you do, I’ll show you.” Judging by this exchange, it looks like Barry is making a pitch to Pied Piper about an alliance between the two. And in the scene where Barry is believed to be addressing Gorilla Grodd, he says, “I need your help to save the world,” which makes the telepathic ape a second potential recruit for Barry’s new team.

The Flash season 9 extended trailer points to Goldface, Hotness, and Chillblaine being involved in this storyline. One shot in the footage gathers all of these characters together at S.T.A.R. Labs. All of them being in the same place (and not fighting each other) builds credence for the theory that they’ll all be uniting under Barry’s leadership, possibly as a heroic incarnation of the Rogues.

Why The Flash Would Recruit Villains Instead Of Heroes

Barry creating a team of villains to battle a bigger threat would beg the obvious question: why not just call upon the heroes of the Arrowverse? At a certain point, Barry may do just that, considering that Diggle, Wally West, and Stephen Amell’s Green Arrow are all confirmed to appear in the season’s ninth episode. But until then, the Flash may find himself relying primarily on some of his villains for assistance instead. In light of the circumstances, this decision would make sense. After all, Central City doesn’t really host that many superheroes anymore. Both Vibe and the Elongated Man left, Killer Frost is dead, and Jesse Quick supposed died during the Crisis. At this point, Allegra is actually the only member of Team Flash with real powers.

If a powerful new villain shows up, the list of available superheroes he can call in for help isn’t as long as it once was, which would be all the more reason for Barry to think outside the box when it comes to figuring out how to answer this threat. And if the new enemy is plural – as the promise of a new Rogues team suggests – it may become necessary for Barry to seek out multiple allies. If he has to take down a whole team, he may determine that he can’t tackle this challenge without outside help.

Who The Flash’s Villain Team Could Fight In Season 9

As for which Arrowverse villain may make such an unorthodox team-up necessary, the strongest candidate for this role is Red Death. In the comic books, Red Death is an evil, speedster version of Batman from the multiverse. As noted above, The Flash will be replacing Bruce Wayne with Ryan Wilder for its take on the story. Based on Red Death’s high power level in the source material, she could be the reason Barry feels compelled to make a team. She may also be the person Barry was referring to in the trailer when he mentioned a new speedster building a time machine.

Teases for The Flash season 9’s story put a handful of Arrowverse characters in a position to join her. Bloodwork and new versions of Captain Boomerang and Murmur are expected to be on hand as well. Unless their roles relate to separate storylines, they may be among the new Rogues Barry will have to contend with when his show returns. Depending on how things play out, The Flash has the potential to deliver an epic clash between two supervillain groups for its final chapter.
