How to Defeat Sapphire Weapon in Final Fantasy XIV

How to Defeat Sapphire Weapon in Final Fantasy XIV

The Empire has unleashed Warmachina inspired by Final Fantasy 7. Players can fight against legendary bosses Ruby Weapon and Sapphire Weapon.

The new patch to Final Fantasy XIV will release later in December and it will be filled with all sorts of new content. Not only will there be balance changes to jobs, but there will also be new content. This includes new dungeons related to the story, raids, and trial content. Among the most anticipated is the upcoming fight against Emerald Weapon, one of the optional mega bosses from Final Fantasy 7. This should be exciting to a lot of players, especially many who came back to experience the revamped A Realm Reborn either as full subscribers or through the expanded free trial.

Going up against Emerald Weapon will have a few steps. The fight is part of the Sorrow of Werlyt questline that expands on the war following Stormblood. Players will need to have completed the entire Shadowbringers expansion pack and fought two other Imperial Weapons: Ruby Weapon and Sapphire Weapon. The latter is a very interesting battle, as it is a solo trial where players will take command of their own special machina with unique powers.

Fighting Ruby Weapon In Final Fantasy XIV

As mentioned, the Imperial Weapons serve as part of the Werlyt side quests. These can only be accessed after gaining level 80 with any combat job. Players will also have to complete the level 80 quest Shadowbringers, which concludes the initial story of the expansion pack. Even after that, one will need to go through the post-game content stories of Vows of Virtues, Deeds of Cruelty, and Echoes of a Fallen Star. This will cumulate in the level 80 quest Old Enemies, New Threats. Immediately afterward, players can head to the Lochs X:36, Y:32 and speak with the Resistance Officer for the quest Ruby Doomsday. This will unlock the trial Cinder Drift, which requires an average item level of 455.

The fight consists of two phases, first against Ruby Weapon’s outer shell and then directly against their pilot. In the first part, Ruby weapon deals the standard tank busters, room wide unavoidable damage, and many area of effect attacks that can be dodged with Echo sense markers. Several attacks will place vulnerability debuffs, causing players to suffer additional damage if they fail another mechanic. Ruby Weapon can also target players other than the main tank holding max enmity with Ruby Ray. When this happens, healers and DPS may need to run behind the boss to avoid taking damage. At other points, it may also use a High-Powered Homing Laser, which puts two stack markers on different party members. This means the party will need to split into two equal groups of four or risk one or more people dying.

In the second phase, the boss will continually rain down different types of comets and meteors. The most deadly and consistent one is Meteor Project, which deals heavy raid-wide damage. If healers aren’t careful, or if others have too many vulnerability stacks, expect multiple deaths. The first two Meteor Projects can be recovered from, but the third one will cause a wipe if allowed to go off. This is also compounded by the addition of Outrage, which deals constant damage that might also kill the party before even the last Meteor Project lands. Defeating Ruby Weapon will grant Tomestones of Phantasmagoria and Allegory (though this will be updated with the release of patch 5.4).

Challenging Sapphire Weapon In Final Fantasy XIV

After beating Ruby Weapon for the first time, players can now return to the Resistance Officer for a new level 80 quest, Sleep Now in Sapphire. The quest NPCs will lead the player to an instanced solo trial against Sapphire Weapon. In this battle, rather than using a favorite job class, Cid will provide his specially made G-Warrior. This Ironworks machina is a special weaponized suit to take Imperial Weapons head-on. It has its own attacks and arsenal for this particular encounter.

Aether Cannon fires a blast at targets up to 40 yalms away with a potency of 600 and no EP cost. Aether Mine in a 40 yalm ranged attack with a potency of 300 for 800 EP; it will also increase the number of damage targets take by 20% for 40 seconds. Final Flourish is a melee attack that will rise in potency with each combo hit from 840 to 1,200 to 1,940 and cost 300 EP per strike. Ultima Buster is an area of effect attack with 50 yalm range and 50 yalm radius that deals damage with potency 1,200 and costs 800 EP. Auto Restoration restores 40% of HP and 30% of EP. Pyretic Booster is an instant buff that increases recast speed and movement, but damages the G-Warrior over time. Last, Aetherial Aegis reduces damage taken by 50% but continually drains EP.

Cid will initially release a few Guidance System drones to let players practice with the new G-Warrior. However, in the real fight players should be more conservative with their starting 10,00 EP stock. It will typically be best to open with Aether Mine for its debuff, and then proceed to Final Flourish for damage. Ultima Buster is mainly for use against groups of minion adds. Aether Cannon is used as a backup for both its range and that it doesn’t require any EP.

Sapphire Weapon itself has a tank buster in the form of Plasma Shot, making Aether Aegis the only means of mitigating the damage. Sapphire Weapon will also often attack with abilities that have huge areas of effect, making Aether Aegis import there if it seems impossible to move out of the way. It may also use Optimized Judgment which only provides a safe zone directly under Sapphire Weapon itself. It will also at times dive underwater, only to spring up and deal damage with the crashing waves. This momentary breather is a good time to use Auto Restoration. Sapphire Weapon can also summon turrets, which not only fire blasts but can self-destruct if left alone for too long. As the fight goes on and the boss loses health, it will start to overlap attacks simultaneously.

While the fight goes on, Cid will still be over comms link providing tips. Eventually, Sapphire Weapon will go down for good. With this monster defeated, players will be ready to engage with Emerald weapon as soon as it becomes available with the 5.4 patch.

Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers are available now on PC, Mac, and PlayStation 4.
