Super Follows and Ticketed Spaces open up new earning opportunities for creators on Twitter. Here’s how users can start testing them right now.
Twitter is expanding the way creators can monetize their content in two unique ways. Today, select users can start trialing Super Follows and Ticketed Spaces — two features that mark a large shift forward in how the app can be used.
While Twitter started as a simple app for sharing random thoughts, hot takes, and cute cat pictures, it’s gradually matured into something much more than all of that. Today, Twitter is used for following the news, sending DMs to friends, and has even turned into a subscription service with the launch of Twitter Blue. Twitter’s made it very clear that it wants to take the social platform in new directions, and that’s extremely evident with the two new features mentioned above.
On June 22, 2021, Twitter formally unveiled Super Follows and Ticked Spaces. Both have been leaked and teased leading up to this, but they’ve now been fully unveiled in all of their glory. Super Follows stands to be the most game-changing of the two, as it reimagines the idea of following other users. Like Patreon, Super Following another Twitter user will grant that person access to exclusive content only available to them and other Super Followers. This can include exclusive tweets, photos, videos, or whatever else that person decides to share. Users can customize how much they want to charge for Super Follows, including $2.99, $4.99, or $9.99/month. It’s also important to note that Super Follows isn’t replacing the ability to ‘regular’ follow anyone for free. Instead, Twitter imagines Super Follows as a way for creators to “get even closer to your biggest supporters by offering bonus content and interaction.” The same is true of Ticketed Spaces. Free Twitter Spaces aren’t going anywhere, but for creators that want to offer a more exclusive experience, Ticketed Spaces allow them to charge a set fee before someone can join. Ticket prices can range between $1 and $999, creators get to choose how many available tickets they want to offer, and they can promote a Ticketed Space using in-app and push notifications.
How To Use The Two New Twitter Features
Although Twitter isn’t quite ready to widely release Super Follows and Ticketed Spaces to the public, it is currently trialing both features with a small group of users. To apply for either one, open the Twitter app, tap the menu icon at the top-left of the screen, and then tap the ‘Monetization’ button. Both Android and iOS users can apply to test Ticketed Spaces, whereas testing for Super Follows is currently limited to iOS. Furthermore, if the Monetization option isn’t showing up in the menu, that means Twitter hasn’t selected that user to partake in the test. Super Follows and Ticketed Spaces are expected to launch more broadly “in the coming months,” so don’t worry if the Monetization shortcut doesn’t show up right away.
While users don’t have to pay to use Super Follows or Ticketed Spaces, Twitter will take a small revenue cut from any earnings generated through them. Users will get to keep 97 percent of all the money they make right out of the gate, meaning Twitter only takes a measly 3 percent cut. Once someone has earned up to $50,000 in lifetime earnings, however, Twitter’s cut increases to 20 percent — leaving creators with 80 percent of the money they pull in. It remains to be seen if users grab onto Super Follows and Ticketed Spaces the way Twitter is hoping, but at the very least, the bones are there for something interesting to come out of all this.
