There’s been a lot of debate regarding the name of the 2021 iPhone. Per a supply chain report, it seems the iPhone 13 name is all but confirmed.
Apple is set to release the next iPhone in September, and per a new report, it’ll almost certainly be called the iPhone 13. This contradicts other reports claiming Apple will call it the iPhone 12S, adding yet another piece to the puzzle of the 2021 iPhone’s name.
While iPhone names usually aren’t a point of contention, things have been different this year. On the one hand, it’s widely regarded that the next iPhone will be the iPhone 13. It follows Apple’s naming pattern with the iPhone X, iPhone 11, and iPhone 12. It just makes the most logical sense the next entry in the series is the iPhone 13. At the same time, some people have claimed that Apple will skip the iPhone 13 name entirely and instead launch the iPhone 12S in 2021 — followed by the iPhone 14 in 2022.
Although nothing is official until Apple says so, a new article from UDN just made it a lot more likely that the iPhone 13 is actually happening this year. Speaking with sources familiar with the supply chain of Apple products, UDN says, “Apple’s new iPhone this year has entered the countdown stage of stocking, and the supply chain has reported that this year’s new phone will be named iPhone 13.” Pegatron will be responsible for manufacturing the iPhone 13 mini this year, whereas manufacturing for the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max will fall on Foxconn.
Pros & Cons Of Apple Calling It IPhone 13
For all intents and purposes, the iPhone 13 name is probably the right call. It’s how many people are already referring to this year’s iPhone, it keeps Apple’s naming pattern consistent, and it’ll be easy for people to understand it’s a direct successor to the iPhone 12. It’s simple, expected, and now seems to be the route Apple is heading.
With all of that said, why were there rumors of an iPhone 12S in the first place? It largely had to do with 13 being considered an unlucky number in western culture. One could argue that some people wouldn’t buy the iPhone 13 based on its name alone, and given the possibility for lower sales, Apple would compromise with the iPhone 12S name. While the S moniker is something Apple has previously used for the iPhone 6S and iPhone XS, it’s been three years since that branding was last seen. Apple has shown no intention of bringing it back since the iPhone XS launched in 2018, making the idea of an iPhone 12S hitting store shelves in 2021 seem a bit unlikely.
Although it ultimately doesn’t matter what this year’s iPhone is called, it is interesting there’s been so much disagreement around the topic. There’s always the possibility Apple will come out and announce the iPhone 12S at its hardware event in September, but what seems much more likely is that the iPhone 13 will be the star of this year’s show — superstitions be damned.
