Predator reboot director says he’s been working on the project for almost four years. Two years after Shane Black rebooted the sporadic sci-fi/horror franchise to middling box office results with The Predator, 20th Century Studios will take another stab at it with a just-reported reboot from 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg.
The Predator series of course began way back in 1987 with John McTiernan’s classic action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leader of a group of mercenary soldiers whose mission into the jungle takes a turn as they’re confronted by an alien big game hunter who invisibly stalks his prey. That box office hit was followed up with 1990’s Predator 2, which lost Schwarzenegger and moved the action to an urban setting, developments that did not work to the film’s benefit. The Predator character at that point was ensconced enough in pop culture to be pitted against the iconic xenomorph from the Alien movies in a pair of crossover/spinoffs, then returned for a proper Predator movie in 2010’s Predators. The later reboot from Black then tried to put a new spin on the franchise but flopped at the box office with only $160 million grossed worldwide on a reported budget of $88 million.
The flopping of The Predator was not resounding enough however to deter 20th Century Studios and Disney from again revisiting the franchise, as it’s been revealed that a new Predator is coming. While director Trachtenberg is surely happy about being tapped to helm the new project, he’s clearly not happy about news of it being leaked early, as he revealed in a tweet where he also said he’s been working on his vision for Predator for four years in secret – or since well before the last Predator movie came out.
