Seth Rogen will produce a meta-horror movie tentatively titled Video Nasty. The film’s intriguing premise focuses on a group of teens who rent a cursed VHS tape that transports them into a 1980s slasher movie, which threatens to trap them forever unless they can find a way to escape. The title seems to be a nod to “video nasty,” a British term used in the 1980s by the press and censorship organizations in reference to graphic, low-budget horror flicks often distributed on videocassette.

Variety announced that Rogen would produce Video Nasty under his production banner Point Grey after Lionsgate acquired Chris Thomas Devlin’s script. Greg Silverman will also produce the meta-horror movie through his company Stampede Ventures. While no cast members have been announced yet, Jonathan Levine, who collaborated with Rogen on Long Shot, 50/50, and The Night Before, is in talks to direct.

Video Nasty marks just the latest of several horror properties that Rogen has been involved with over the last decade. He and longtime creative partner Evan Goldberg dove headfirst into the genre seven years ago by directing This Is the End, the apocalyptic horror comedy featuring Rogen and a slew of comedy stars that grossed $126 million at the box office. Rogen followed that by developing AMC’s horror-comedy Preacher, which ran from 2015 to 2019. He recently struck a deal in January to adapt the popular 2014 comic series Memetic, a horror-thriller picked up by Lionsgate about a murderous meme. Rogen can currently be seen in An American Pickle, HBO Max’s first original movie that he also produced.
