The new World of Warcraft expansion, Shadowlands, includes several different kinds of currency players will need to earn and use to purchase upgrades and cosmetics. One of the first places players will explore during the main story of Shadowlands is The Maw. This is the place where souls deemed too terrible to join the ranks of a Covenant are sent after death to face eternal torment. It is a land of hopelessness lorded over by an entity called the Jailer, poised to be the final boss of the expansion. As players traverse The Maw and defeat enemies or complete quests, they will be rewarded with a currency called Stygia that can be used to purchase valuable upgrades and buffs. They will need to be careful, however, as every action will draw the attention of the Jailer, noted by a meter called Eye of the Jailer. The Jailer will torment the player slowly and then more aggressively at first the higher the Eye of the Jailer meter goes, and too much attention will lead to an untimely demise.

Stygia amounts rewarded tend to vary somewhat between quests. Players can save Stygia to make purchases from Ve’nari, a mysterious merchant who spends her time in The Maw. If the player is caught and executed by the Jailer, they will drop a portion of their Stygia. They can recover this by revisiting the same site where they were killed upon respawning, though this can be dangerous. If the player dies a second time, that portion of Stygia is lost for good. It will be important for players to farm Stygia, particularly to purchase upgrades and buffs that will help them in the endgame of the expansion. Here’s how to earn Stygia in The Maw and avoid the Jailer in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands.

There are a few ways for players to earn Stygia in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. The most common is from killing enemies. It appears players earn at least one Stygia for every normal and regular elite enemy they kill in The Maw. This is a slow method of Stygia farming and can become frustrating.

Each rare monster a player kills in The Maw, by contrast, can drop 45 Stygia. Killing rares is a quicker and more efficient method of earning Stygia, but it will increase the player’s Eye of the Jailer level more quickly. Of course, there are levels to this, and minor and major rares will offer more Stygia for less of an impact on Eye of the Jailer than event rares will.

Players can also earn some Stygia while farming reputation from Ve’nari. They will also earn some for completing the daily and weekly quests available in The Maw, though this will increase the player’s Eye of the Jailer more quickly than any other way of farming Stygia.

Here’s how much Stygia players can earn from completing various tasks in The Maw:

  • Normal/Elite Mob Kill: 1 Stygia
  • Rescuing an imprisoned Soul: 20 Stygia
  • Event rare/Special encounter kill or completion: 45 Stygia
  • Stygian Caches: 45 Stygia
  • Minor/Major Rare Kill: 75 Stygia
  • Wrath of the Jailer boss kill: 100 Stygia
  • Daily quest completion: 140 Stygia
  • Hunt completion: 300 Stygia
  • Weekly quest completion: 425 Stygia
  • Weekly quest for Perdition Hold/Beastwarrens: 700 Stygia
  • Ve’nari story quest completion: Various amounts

Players will need to be mindful that each of these activities comes with some Eye of the Jailer points. At each of the five levels of Eye of the Jailer, the Jailer will send more enemies to try and kill the player character. At Level 5, the Jailer will simply siphon the character’s life force every 10 seconds until they fall. Each level of Eye of the Jailer requires 1000 points to reach. Weekly quests, weekly quest for Perdition Hold/Beastwarrens, and Hunt completion all come with 1000 Eye of the Jailer or more, making them the riskiest ways to earn Stygia.

To best farm Stygia, players should focus on completing quests first early in the week. Then, they can focus on killing enemies. If they notice their Eye of the Jailer meter getting too high, it is possible to portal to Oribos to avoid being killed and losing collected Stygia.

Players will ultimately differ when it comes to spending Stygia. Some players prefer to purchase any permanent upgrades from Ve’nari first, including Torghast permanent upgrades followed by upgrades for The Maw. Others will prefer to save up for more sockets or conduits instead. Some players suggest the Sigil of the Unseen, which will make the character permanently immune to the damage debuff from the Jailer’s assassins at Eye of the Jailer Level 3, and the Soul Stabilizing Talisman, which makes the character permanently immune to the Mark on the Soul attack from Valkyries at Eye of the Jailer Level 4. These will make it easier for players to spend time fighting enemies and completing quests in The Maw.
