After years of on and off talks about a revival, Mads Mikkelsen offers a very promising update on Hannibal season 4’s chances. Loosely based on Thomas Harris’ novel series surrounding the titular character, the NBC horror-thriller show scored rave reviews during its three-season run, but never showed strong ratings for the network, being cancelled after a literal cliffhanger ending. The years since have resulted in talks from Mikkelsen, co-star Hugh Dancy and creator Bryan Fuller about a potential season 4 revival or movie expansion.

During a recent interview with Business Insider for his historical epic, The Promised Land, Mikkelsen was asked about the chances for a Hannibal season 4 revival. The star offered one of the most promising updates yet since the show first ended, confirming that Fuller “has a few ideas” and refusing to reveal them in the case that the project finally gets off the ground. Check out what Mikkelsen shared below:

It’s no secret that all of us who were part of the cast and Bryan, we all want to go back. It’s got to happen eventually sooner than later because we’re not getting any younger, right? But the story itself can jump, it can have that gap, which is fine. So it’s all about finding a home for it, but that’s nothing concrete out there now.

Why that’s the case? I don’t know. We love the show and there seem to be a lot of other people liking it as well. But then I got the chance to work with him on “Dust Bunny,” so I got a little whiff of the old times.

He’s got a few ideas, Bryan. So I can’t really reveal any, in case we do start, but I’m sure they made it somehow.

The Perfect Time For Hannibal Season 4 Is Right Around The Corner

Mikkelsen and Fuller have been two of the more enthusiastic about the possibility of a Hannibal season 4, even as the gap has grown since the show first came to an end. The creator, in particular, has been working hard to get a revival off the ground, with Mikkelsen previously indicating that Fuller has been looking to acquire the rights to Harris’ Silence of the Lambs in order to develop it as part of the show’s world. It’s unclear if this is still the plan after the book was adapted for the short-lived CBS show, Clarice.

While Mikkelsen has previously acknowledged that the long wait is risking making the actors age out of their roles, there is another reason why now would be the perfect time to start forging ahead with Hannibal season 4. The season 3 finale, which currently serves as the series finale, premiered on August 29, 2015, making it nearly nine years since the show went off the air. Given it’s now coming up on its tenth anniversary, it would be perfect for the creative team to take advantage of the anniversary to bring the show back.

Though a time jump would likely be needed to bridge the gap, as Mikkelsen indicates, it would nonetheless be a fitting way to bring the Hannibal characters back to the screen. It could go a long way to explaining how Hannibal and Will survived their cliffside fall in the series finale, be it having been stuck in a coma for the decade since, or the former locked away in prison while the latter finally enjoyed some semblance of a peaceful life. Regardless of how the story picks up, Mikkelsen’s confidence in Fuller’s vision is promising for Hannibal to finally come back.
