Selecting a Covenant is one of the most important decisions for a character in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. There are four Covenants for players to choose from, and they act as factions with a certain set of values. Each Covenant plays a role in guiding or otherwise helping souls in the afterlife, and each will come with their own rewards and perks for players to unlock over time. Each Covenant commands a realm within the Shadowlands: the Kyrians control Bastion; the Necrolords control Maldraxxus; the Night Fae control Ardenweald; and the Venthyr control Revendreth. Once a player reaches the new max Level cap of 60, they will receive a quest that takes them to Oribos and asks them to speak to the leaders of each Covenant, then make their choice. The Covenant the player aligns with will affect the trajectory of the rest of their experience with the expansion and dictate some of the major quests they will complete.

Thankfully, this is not a decision that is set in stone. If a player finds their character or play style is simply not suited to the Covenant they chose to join, they have an opportunity to change Covenants. The process won’t take long. In addition, if the player feels a sense of buyer’s remorse and wants to rejoin their initial Covenant later, they may do that too, though this process is considerably longer and requires the character to prove themselves by completing tasks around the home realm. Here’s how to change Covenants in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, and how to change back if needed.

Changing Covenants the first time is a simple matter of returning to Oribos and speaking to the leader of the Covenant the player wants their character to join. Players can find the various Covenant leaders in the following locations:

  • Kyrians: Polemarch Adestres, 36.2, 64.2
  • Necrolords: Baroness Draka, 43, 74
  • Night Fae: Lady Moonberry, 39.6, 60.9
  • Venthyr: General Draven, 44.7, 68.8

The NPC will ask the player character twice if they are sure they want to make the change. This way, if the character accidentally begins speaking to another Covenant leader, they won’t automatically be switched into the new Covenant.

Once the character agrees, they will be switched into the new Covenant and receive a quest from their Covenant Leader to enter the Covenant’s realm and go to the Sanctum. Players should note that any Renown or Sanctum upgrades they had earned or unlocked with their old Covenant will not transfer to the new one. The character will need to start over and complete the same starting quests as before to get their new Covenant Signature and Class Abilities and begin grinding for Sanctum upgrades.

If players change their mind later, they will need to undergo a more rigorous process to rejoin their old Covenant. This is because the members of the Covenant will feel understandably betrayed by the player’s character leaving without much warning.

To rejoin the old Covenant, players first need to speak to that Covenant leader in Oribos. Then, they will receive their first weekly quest, called Prove Your Worth, to complete. The activities in this quest will be restricted to the Covenant’s homeworld, and tasks completed outside the Covenant’s realm will not count.

These quests are not easy, however, and require players to complete a percentage bar of activities that include killing rares and rare elites, finding treasures, completing world quests, and fighting bosses in the homeworld or the dungeon associated with the homeworld. The bar must be filled and the quest turned in prior to the Weekly Reset to count.

Then, the player must find and pick up a quest the next consecutive week from the Covenant Ambassador. This one will be called Rebuild Our Trust, but despite the new name, the tasks and requirements are virtually identical to the first week’s set. Once the player hands in the quest, they will be returned to their original Covenant.

A way to avoid this process might be to remain in the original Covenant and have an alt join a different Covenant. This way, the player can experience everything associated with separate Covenants without losing time or progress.
